Overview

Local Music Organizer is a native macOS application for people who maintain large offline music collections in Apple's Music.app. Its developer, a longtime music collector, originally built it to address problems in his own library: files moved between drives, broken references, duplicates, inconsistent metadata, incomplete ripped albums and multiple versions of the same recording. What began as a personal utility grew into a collection of tools for fellow collectors. A/B comparison and album completeness checks were added at users' request.

Library Index and Dashboard

A reusable SQLite Library Index stores track information and playlist membership for efficient repeat analysis. Indexing can be paused and resumed, updated after changes or refreshed for an individual playlist. Library Dashboard summarizes formats, bitrates, sample rates, bit depths and other properties to reveal what the library contains beyond Music.app's track listings. Diagnostic results can be filtered and exported for further review.

Library diagnostics and file relinking

Health Check helps find missing or inaccessible audio files, broken references, missing artwork and inconsistencies between Music.app records and physical files. Results can be reviewed before action is taken. If a collection has moved to another drive or folder, relinking tools reconnect existing Music.app entries to their files while preserving their library identities. This helps avoid rebuilding playlists or importing duplicates. Follow-up checks can help verify the results.

Albums, metadata and playlists

Album Completeness checks track and disc numbering to identify gaps and other indications of incomplete ripped albums. Investigate unexpected track counts or missing numbers. Other tools investigate metadata, artwork, duplicates and alternative versions. Track Usage shows where recordings appear across playlists; Playlist Compare reveals overlaps and differences; Library Map maps library organization. Shuffle Builder generates playlists using artist, album and title spacing rules without changing the source playlists.

Technical audio inspection

Audio Inspector reports a file's codec and container information, bitrate, sample rate, bit depth, channels and metadata, with visual inspection tools including spectrograms. Audio Authenticity Analyzer examines spectral characteristics that may indicate lossy-to-lossless transcoding, limited bandwidth or sample-rate upscaling. Such results are technical indicators for further investigation, not definitive proof of a recording's origin or audible quality.

A/B Duplicate Compare

This tool lets collectors compare two physical versions of a recording by selecting the same passage and switching between A and B. Timing offset adjustments help align the excerpts, and optional loudness matching temporarily adjusts playback levels for a fairer comparison. Live spectral views display both recordings together or individually in bars or lines. Neither source file is rewritten, normalized, retagged or otherwise modified by the comparison. It can be useful when examining different releases, masterings or encodings of familiar music.

Repair and conversion

Local Music Organizer includes tools for audio repair and conversion, including CUE-based albums, SACD ISO workflows and supported individual file formats. Conversion workflows verify the output and protect original material, with safeguards against overwriting existing files and handling for cancellation. Vinyl De-click provides a before-and-after inspection workflow. Standalone local files can also be inspected or processed without adding them to the Music.app library.

Playback and visualization

Live Spectrum combines local audio playback with a real-time spectrum display. ORIGINAL, CLASSIC and GLASS are three visual presentations of the player, with a compact Elektronika Mini Player also available. They share the same playback system.

A careful approach to your collection

The application works alongside Music.app; it does not edit Apple's private Music database and it does not manage Apple Music subscription streams. Diagnostic operations are intended to let users inspect problems before deciding what to change. File operations, metadata changes and relinking require explicit user choices. Access to selected music files and folders is managed through macOS permissions, and users do not need to upload their audio files to a cloud service or create an LMO account.

Availability

Local Music Organizer runs on macOS 14 Sonoma or later on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. It is distributed exclusively through the Mac App Store. The full-featured trial lasts three days, followed by an optional one-time US$29.99 unlock for continued use. There is no subscription or recurring charge. Made for collectors who want to understand, compare and preserve their recordings.
