Mac App Index is a directory of Mac software. Every app is reviewed by a person before it is listed, and signed-in visitors upvote the apps they like. The catalog is sorted three ways: Hot (recent upvotes), Top (all upvotes) and New (latest additions).
No. Mac App Index is an independent site and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Apple Inc. Mac, macOS and Mac App Store are trademarks of Apple.
Sign in, open the Submit page and enter your app's website (and its Mac App Store link, if it has one). After that you choose a listing option. A free listing needs our badge on your website; once we find the link, the app joins the review queue.
Yes. A standard listing is free as long as your website links to us with the Mac App Index badge. A paid listing without the badge is planned, and featured placement is sold separately on the Advertise page.
The badge is how a free listing pays for itself. A visible, followed link from your site helps people find the directory, and the directory in turn sends visitors to your app. We check the link automatically, so nobody has to email anyone.
We publish a few new apps each week, in the order they were verified. The exact wait depends on the queue. If something is missing from your submission, we write to the email address you signed in with.
Each upvote counts as 1 point when it is cast and loses half its weight every 72 hours. An app's Hot score is the sum of those weights over the last 60 days. Scores are updated on every vote and recalculated every hour, so apps drop down when the votes stop.
No. Hot, Top and New are calculated from upvotes and publish dates only. Paid featured apps appear in a separate Featured carousel on the homepage and a Featured strip above listings, always labelled, but payment never adds votes or changes a Hot or Top position.
Anyone with an account. You sign in with a magic link sent to your email or with Google. Each account can upvote an app once, and you can take your vote back at any time.
Descriptions start from the developer's own website and Mac App Store page. Some fields are drafted with AI from that public material, then checked and edited by a person before the app is published.
Email us with the app's page on Mac App Index and what should change. Price changes, new versions, broken links and wrong categories are usually corrected within a few working days.
Yes. If you make the app, write to us from an address on the app's domain, or from the account that submitted it, and we will take the listing down.
We re-check badges on free listings every day. If the link is gone, or marked nofollow, sponsored or ugc, the listing loses its verified badge status. Put the link back and verify again to restore it.
We count visits with Plausible Analytics, which uses no cookies and stores no personal data. Google Analytics runs only if you accept its cookies in the cookie banner, and you can withdraw that any time with the Cookie settings link in the footer. Other than that, the only cookies we set are the ones needed to sign you in and keep you signed in. Your light or dark theme choice is kept in your browser's local storage. Details are in our privacy policy.
See the Advertise page for featured listings and ad placements, or email us for anything custom. Every paid placement is labelled as Featured or Ad.
